our commitment to setting a new benchmark for safety in the
Canadian construction industry.
Effective January 1, 2026, all EllisDon personnel, including subcontractors and visitors, must wear a CSA and/or ANSI Type 2 hard
hat with manufacturer-approved integrated (four-point) chin
strap, worn according to the specifications, properly adjusted, and
fastened. The hard hat class worn by personnel must be appropriate for the hazards and compliant with local legislation.
This is a significant move for the company and for our industry.
This is part of a broader effort to address the construction industry's high incidence of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs).
With TBIs representing approximately 25% of construction-related [1] with falls accounting for 68% of these injuries - followed
by incidents involving falling objects and being struck by equipment - this change is not a want, but a need.[2]
Research demonstrates that Type 2 hard hats, especially those
equipped with integrated retention systems, offer markedly superior protection, significantly mitigating the risk of severe or fatal
head injuries.[3]
What the research also states between the lines is that these
statistics and findings are attached to human lives - the lives of
the people we work alongside every day - lives that need to be, and
will be, prioritized on all EllisDon worksites.
As part of the Canadian Construction Safety Council (CCSC),
EllisDon along with the other members of the CCSC, is aligning
with this initiative. The CCSC is dedicated to driving positive
change in the construction industry’s safety standards across
Canada while setting new benchmarks for the industry. We all
share the goal of reducing traumatic brain injuries and fatalities in the
industry and, ultimately, keeping our workers safe.
This collaborative effort highlights the importance of prioritizing
worker safety on construction sites and encourages the adoption of
safer work practices. By sharing resources and expertise, the CCSC is
dedicated to driving positive change in the construction industry’s
safety standards across Canada. By harnessing the collective strength
of our members, we aim to elevate the safety performance of individual companies and set new benchmarks for the industry.
Many of EllisDon’s trade partners have already moved towards the
adoption of the Type 2 Hard Hats. Their willingness to embrace this
enhanced safety measure speaks to a shared commitment to protecting workers.
“At Walters, safety is not just a policy—it is a responsibility we
uphold at every level of the organization,” said Michelangelo LaSelva
Director, Sustainability, Health & Safety, Walters Inc. “Transitioning
to Type 2 hard hats demonstrates our commitment to continuous
improvement in health and safety by providing superior protection
against both top and lateral impacts. This proactive step reflects our
dedication to industry-leading standards and reinforces our promise
to safeguard the wellbeing of every employee on our projects.”
Since EllisDon adopted the Type 2 hard hats to all EllisDon staff in
2023, we have seen first-hand the benefits of the protection provided
by this level of hard hat.
Type 2 hard hats provide enhanced protection by covering the
top, front, side, and rear of the head, making them indispensable
in dynamic construction environments. The integrated chin straps
ensure a secure fit, keeping the hard hat in place during slips, falls,
