HEALTH & SAFETY
THE EVOLUTION OF
HEAD PROTECTION
IN ONTARIO
By MATT ZERVOS
Pioneer of the Industry
The last century has brought sweeping changes to the world
of construction, but few symbols are as iconic or enduring
as the hard hat. First introduced in 1919 as the “Hard Boiled
Hat,” this game changing innovation quickly became a staple
with its 昀椀rst mandated use during the Hoover Dam Project
in 1931. Its purpose was simple: protect workers from falling
debris. Nearly a century later, the basic concept of the hard
hat has remained unchanged - even as construction sites have
transformed in almost every other way.

New kid on the block
The construction industry has embraced
technology at an accelerated pace from
high-tech machinery and advanced
robotics to the rise of cordless power
tools and even AI-assisted planning.
However, personal protective equipment
(PPE), particularly in head protection,
has lagged. That is, until now.
Enter Type II safety helmets. They are
designed not only to meet the demands of
modern jobsite hazards but to exceed the
capabilities of traditional hard hats.
So, what sets Type II head protection
apart? Figure 1 highlights several key
innovations, including:
ENHANCED PROTECTION AGAINST TOP AND OBLIQUE IMPACTS
ADVANCED FOAM SUSPENSION SYSTEMS TO BETTER ABSORB ENERGY FOR
INTERNAL PROTECTION WITHIN THE SHELL
INTEGRATED 4-POINT CHINSTRAP TO MAINTAIN RETENTION DURING FALLS
BOLT ™ ACCESSORY COMPATIBILITY [MILWAUKEE TOOL] THAT OFFERS THREE ATTACHMENT SLOTS
PER SIDE, WITH FRONT AND REAR MOUNTING POINTS FOR FULL CUSTOMIZATION
