REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY OF YORK|YORK REGION
Project Pollinator
York Region’s Project Pollinator is an innovative initiative aimed
at supporting biodiversity, improving air quality, and engaging
the community. By transforming Regionally owned boulevards
into pollinator meadows, the project helps increase
populations of butterflies, bees, and other essential pollinators
that play a crucial role in food production and ecosystem
stability.
York Region carefully selected plant species that will create
thriving habitats for pollinators. Replacing traditional grass with
native flowering plants eliminates the need for diesel-powered
mowing, reducing greenhouse gas emissions while enhancing
carbon sequestration. These meadows not only contribute to
cleaner air but also provide vital habitats for pollinators that
sustain agriculture and natural ecosystems. The use of
reclaimed stone from road projects further supports
sustainability efforts by stabilizing meadow slopes.
Beyond environmental benefits, the project fosters public
awareness and community participation. Strategically located
near parks and community centers, these meadows serve as
educational spaces where residents can learn about the
importance of pollination. Informational signage and hands-on planting events offer opportunities for
community involvement, strengthening environmental stewardship.
Meadow locations were selected based on ecological suitability, accessibility, and community impact; additional
meadow locations will be considered in future-planning. Project Pollinator represents a long-term commitment
by York Region to climate resilience and ecological conservation.
