Belfountain Rehabilitation & Improvements,
Town of Caledon, Project 14-4065
Known for its scenic views, rich history dating back to the 1800s - Belfountain
attracts many visitors each spring and summer. To accommodate the high
volume of pedestrians and infrastructure needs, the Region of Peel undertook
the Belfountain project to improve infrastructure, safety, drainage, and
integration for all users.
The project focused on traffic engineering improvements aimed at enhancing
pedestrian and motorist safety, replacing deteriorating assets, rehabilitating
pavement, upsizing culverts to improve geomorphology and ecological
conditions, and making streetscaping improvements. Traffic engineering
improvements were made at the intersection of Old Main Street and Bush
Street to improve functionality and pedestrian safety.
Additionally, the project included features such as armor stone planters and
seating areas, reflecting the community’s rich history with supporting local
quarries. Peel collaborated with local community groups including the
Belfountain Heritage Society and local artists to create a bi-centennial
monument in celebration of Belfountain’s 200th anniversary in 2025.
Throughout the project lifecycle, close coordination with specialized disciplines
such as cultural heritage specialists, streetscaping architects, and engineers
was essential in creating a functional design that preserved the area's heritage
aesthetic. During construction, the project team worked closely to address
varying site conditions and ensure the project was executed according to the design. Peel’s open communication
strategy with the community was successful in keeping them informed of the work’s progress. This project
exemplifies successful collaboration between the agency, consultant, contractor, and community to achieve
Peel’s objectives while preserving the heritage of the community.
