COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
ERIK NICKEL
As the General Manager of Municipal Works and City Engineer for
Niagara Falls, Erik Nickel, P.Eng., demonstrates a deep-seated
commitment to community enrichment that extends far beyond
his daily responsibilities overseeing significant municipal
infrastructure. A driving force in promoting engineering and public
works within the Niagara Region, Erik has served as the Co-Chair
of the Niagara Engineering Week Organizing Committee since
2012.
Through his leadership, the committee orchestrates a range of
initiatives aimed at elevating the profile of the engineering
profession. The annual Engineering Week Luncheon, a key event
organized by Erik, has become a vital source of support for future engineers, having awarded over 80 entry
scholarships to post-secondary students. This dedication to nurturing talent underscores his commitment to the
long-term growth of the field.
Recognizing the importance of community connection, Erik’s committee also engages with local students
through educational outreach, including interactive bridge-building competitions for grade 7 classrooms.
Additionally, the annual luncheon has evolved into a meaningful fundraising platform, generating over $10,000
for local Niagara charities through thoughtful 50/50 draws.
Erik’s dedication to the public works community is further evidenced by his current role as Vice-Chair of the
OPWA West Central Branch Executive. His past contributions include serving on the Joint PWO/CEO Project
Awards Committee and his involvement with the Niagara Peninsula Roadbuilders Association. Erik’s community
spirit is also reflected in his years of coaching youth in hockey and softball, as well as his active participation in
his church as Head Usher and Worship Leader.
